Principles of Design

Did you know that successful interior design is based on the principles of scale, proportion and balance? Scale is the overall magnitude, as in “they built on a grand scale.” Proportion is about the size of things in relation to one another. Balance is the arrangement of the various elements to produce a harmoniously integrated whole. A great room with soaring ceilings will want larger furnishings in proportion to the grand scale, arranged to create a pleasing sense of balance. Look through a design magazine for a room that appeals to you. Analyze the scale, proportion and balance, and you’ll likely see these golden principles in practice!
