Growing Older Has Its Benefits
Did you know that aging brings a host of benefits? In her book “You Could Live a Long Time: Are You Ready?” author Lyndsay Green says the many benefits of aging include reduced worries, a more stress-free life, more control over your time, and a reduced need to please others. She discovered that money matters far less than learning to take a light-hearted view of yourself and the events of your life. She also says a “work plan” is more important than a retirement plan. Paid work can be replaced by volunteer work, but you still need to a purpose that makes you feel valued. It’s also good advice to learn a few jokes, so you can be fun to be with. Make other people laugh, learn how to laugh at yourself, and growing older will be an enjoyable journey!

Boomers Lead the Entrepreneurial Charge
According to boomerwatch.ca, the baby boomer generation – 55- to 64-year-olds – has the highest rate of entrepreneurial activity. A U.S. study found that baby boomers are seeking new sources of activity and income during their pre-retirement and retirement years. Boomers have the experience, skills, contacts and other resources to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities. Experts are not surprised by the risk-taking nature of baby boomers, whose childhoods in the 1960s and 1970s formed their attitude toward aging. There is a sense of ‘I will not age according to stereotypes,’ and part of that is ‘I’m not going to retire.’ Many baby boomers look at retirement simply as the next phase of opportunity and growth. In real estate terms, this translates into growing demand for home offices and a ‘wired’ in-home infrastructure.

Get Ready for the Demographic Powerhouse Called “Zoomers!”
Did you know that the demographic group previously known as “baby boomers” have been christened with a new moniker – “zoomers” – by none other than Moses Znaimer. It is no wonder this media-mogul-marketer extraordinaire is now focused on this group. Zoomers account for more than half of all consumer spending and more than 70% of financial assets. They are the largest group by far in the market for real estate, travel, health & beauty, home improvement and financial services. The Zoomer attitude is changing the nature of aging – Zoomers are active, often working past the typical retirement age. They engage in a wide variety of activities with zeal – fitness, education, volunteering travelling. Targeting this group is about understanding how they are reinventing what it means to be 50+.

Boomers Flock to the Internet
Did you know that people over 50 spend more time online than any other demographic group? Over 15% of adult Internet users are older than 55, and the number of users in this segment is growing in excess of 20% per year. Boomers have more money to spend and they are loyal to sites that appeal to them. Sites like 50plus.com attract boomers, and are good places to advertise. I link my web site and my listings to this site and others like it, in order to zoom in on high-potential 50-plus buyers.

Opportunities Abound with the “Pre-Retirement” Segment
Did you know that the “pre-retirement” real estate market has distinct characteristics that can be precisely targeted for excellent results? Recent research says that the affluent 48+ age group is working at the top of its income and has the financial stamina to acquire property. With children leaving home, they seek to downsize in square footage but not in quality. They want a home away from the city, but accessible to it. Pre-retirees are physically active and seek a wide variety of recreational opportunities. They tend to choose a community that appeals to them as a place to eventually retire full-time. Hmmm… this sounds a lot like Niagara-on-the-Lake to me!

New Options for Accommodating Seniors at Home
Did you know that one in five Canadians will reach the age of 65 by 2026? Accommodating all these seniors will be a challenge, and one option is called “aging in place.” This refers to the concept of aging in your own home, rather than in a seniors’ residence. If you want to consider aging in place, you need to analyze your environment against your personal needs and limitations. Is your house safe? Will you have the necessary support and services? Is your environment sufficiently flexible to adapt to your changing needs over time? Staying in your own home is a great alternative if you can make it work, and more of today’s construction is built with our aging population in mind. (August 26, 2006)

Are You Part of the “Sandwich Generation?”
Did you know that according to Statistics Canada, about 27% of Canadians aged 45 to 64 with children at home are also caring for a senior? More than 80% of this generation is also working outside the home. Are you part of this “Sandwich Generation,” caught between the demands of raising children and caring for aging relatives, while trying to earn a living? Richard Earle of the Canadian Institute of Stress suggests you map out your priorities and reallocate your time and energy accordingly. Reduce your expectations and above all, take time for yourself! “Seniorpreneurs” Are a Growing Segment
Did you know that the new “seniorpreneurs,” defined as people 55+ who start a business, represent a growing segment? Seniorpreneur businesses grew by 35% from 2001 to 2005. An increasing number of retirees choose self-employment or small business as a way to stay active and supplement retirement income. Many prefer to work from home, which is one factor fuelling demand for well-appointed home offices. (November 18, 2006)
